    Ukranian Women's Center Tapestry

In a commission for Mitzi Perdue, Deborah Johnson spearheaded the creation of a community tapestry that now hangs with pride in the Women's Center of Ukraine. The center was funded by MS Perdue in response to the human trafficking and exploitation of women occurring during the Ukrainian War. The Woman's shelter and school offers an opportunity for women to rebuild their lives. This tapestry a vibrant homage to the strength of women, features a central female figure surrounded by flowers. Each flower contributed by members of the community stands as a gesture of solidarity and support for the women affected by the chaos of war. A gift from The General Federation of Women Groups(GFWC) with over 20 volunteer chapters active in Delaware. The flowers are symbolic; the peach blossom, Delaware's state flower, the red American beauty rose and the sunflower, a national symbol of Ukraine. The forget-me-not, the state flower of Alaska, was a gift from the The Yupik, a group of Indigenous peoples of Alaska and the Russian Far East. The flower is from the Yupik chapter of MMIW, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, to raise awareness and stand in remembrance of their sisters in Ukraine.
